Tricolored Heron – entertained me this morning

This morning at The Rookery in Venice, Florida, a Tricolored Heron entertained me for quite a time as it edged its way around the banks of the pond looking for its breakfast.  Its gorgeous blue beak and it richly coloured plumage caught my attention so I was captivated and watched it as it patiently worked its way around the pond towards me.  It had some success during its stalking as it managed to catch two small fish and woosh they had disappeared down its gullet!

At one point it landed at the base of the bank just in front of me, so I quickly released the D4 with 600mm f/4 VR II abd TC-14e II and inched towards where the Tricolored was at the waters edge.  I managed to get a head shot, which may be my favourite shot of the morning – hand held!
